IU Southeast Sweeps Spalding Wednesday

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team extended its winning streak to eight games with a doubleheader sweep of Spalding University on Wednesday.

Jessica Leanhart (6-0) pitched a complete game, one-hit shutout in game one. She struck out 11 and walked one in the 6-0 win.

The Grenadiers (11-1) opened the game with a three-run first inning. Alyssa Price hit a double which scored Morgan Klosterman who reached on a single. Montanah Rogers singled to left to score Price. Later, a misplayed grounder by Spalding's Kaitlyn Mitchell allowed Rogers to score.

Price added another RBI in the second when she hit a single to center to score Klosterman who had singled and stolen second.

In the fifth, Summer Sanders hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Rogers who reached on an error. Then Katelyn Heines came around to score on an error.

In game two, IU Southeast got on the board early once again en route to a 5-3 win. Shelby Lucas doubled and scored on a Price double. A Rogers ground out scored Price and the Grenadiers led 2-0.

The Eagles answered in the top of the second. They loaded the bases with one out, but starter Caroline Cato was able to limit the damage to just one run. Brooke Conder hit into a fielder's choice which scored Amanda Gilliland. The Cato struck out Shelby Kilgore swinging to end the threat.

The Grenadiers would add a run in the third when Rogers hit an RBI double which scored Brookelyn Visker.

Two more runs were scored in the fifth when Visker doubled to score Morgan Klosterman. Visker would later score on a throwing error.

Spalding made interesting by scoring two runs in the sixth. After Cato hit Kelci Flener, Becca Mouser hit an RBI double. She moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Kaylin Rucker's single.

Leanhart replaced Cato and got the four-out save, her first of the season.

Cato (5-1) worked five and two-thirds, gave up three runs on four hits and struck out six.

IU Southeast vists Hanover tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
