Grenadier Softball Splits Pair With St. Catharine

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball snapped its eight-game losing streak with a comfortable 6-2 win over St. Catharine on Sunday after dropping game one 5-3.

In game one, the Grenadiers led 2-0 after five innings. IU Southeast opened the scoring in the bottom fo the fourth when Becca Schoenung got a bunt down on a squeeze play. Sydney Seger scored and the Grenadiers had two runners in scoring position after Schoenung advanced on the throw home. However, the Grenadiers would not capitalize and ended the inning with just one run across.

IU Southeast added another run in the next inning when Brookelyn Visker hit an RBI single to score Morgan Keefer.

The Patriots responded with two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game and the game would require extra innings.

St. Catharine would score one run in the top of the eighth but the Grenadiers got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Emily Weiss singled to score Visker.

The Patriots put the game away in the top of the ninth when Tiffany Wickline hit a two-run double to center. The Grenadiers were retired in order to end the game.

Emily Weiss picked up the loss in relief of Caroline Cato who worked seven innings and gave up two runs on five hits.

In game two, Oppenhuis came through with another two-run double scoring Seger and Brooke Barnett who had reached on a single and fielder's choice, respectively.

After St. Catharine tied the game with runs in the top of the third and fourth innings, the Grenadiers took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth when Sidney Chumbler singled to center and Brooke Barnett scored.

IU Southeast would tack on the three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. After Seger walked and Barnett reached on a bunt single, Schoenung reached base on a wild throw by pitcher Jennifer Ortega. Seger and Barnett scored and Schoenung would come around to score on a Weiss single.

Emily Weiss pitched a complete game for her first collegiate win. She gave up two runs on four hits, walked a batter and struck out four.

Oppenhuis and Schoenung each had two RBI in the win.

IU Southeast hosts Union College Tuesday at 2 p.m.
