Grenadiers Open RSC Play With 51-48 Win At Midway

MIDWAY, Ky. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team opened conference play by pulling out a hard-fought win on the road 51-48 over Midway.

Annie Thomas had a game-high 18 points and seven steals. Ashley Lyninger had nine points and six rebounds and Ashley Johnson and Malerie Martin each added seven points.

The Grenadiers (5-2, 1-0 RSC) overcame a dismal first-half offensive performance to get past the Eagles. IU Southeast only scored 18 points in the first half and shot 7-of-33 from the field for 21 percent shooting.

IU Southeast opened the third quarter on a 12-0 run behind the play of Annie Thomas, who scored 14 of her game-high 18 points in the second half. She scored eight points and had six steals in the third quarter.

IU Southeast held Midway scoreless in the second half until the 3:40 mark of the third quarter when Courtney Pfister scored to make it a 33-30 Midway lead. The Grenadiers held the Eagles to just seven points in the third quarter and outscored them 33-17 in the second half.

The Grenadiers forced 16 turnovers in the second half which helped slow the Midway offense and led to some easy baskets as IU Southeast got back in the game.

IU Southeast scored 18 points off turnovers in the contest.

The Grenadiers trailed 38-36 after third periods of play but Madi Woods opened the fourth quarter by connecting on a three-point shot to give the Grenadiers a 39-38 lead. IU Southeast did not relinquish the lead. IU Southeast forced five turnovers in the fourth quarter and allowed only five made field goals to hang on for the win.

IU Southeast hosts Brescia University Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
