Box Score 2 NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team defeated Spalding University 5-2 and 7-4 on Wednesday.
In game one, IU Southeast (24-22) broke the game open with a four-run third inning. Lindsey Keen and Baylee Krueger each singled, then a RBI single by Maddie Probus made it 1-0. Becca Schoenung tripled to right-center and then she scored on a wild pitch.
Spalding (17-8) cut the lead in half in the fifth when Brooke Smith singled to score Addie Morris.
But the Grenadiers got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Baylee Krueger hit a inside-the-park home to right for her first home run of the year.
Becca Schoenung got the win as she worked five innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on eights while striking out three and walking one. Emily Weiss earned her first save in two scoreless innings of relief.
Lindsey Keen and Baylee Krueger each had two hits.
In game two, Emily Weiss had a no-hitter through five and a third innings of work and IU Southeast scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take a comfortable lead but IU Southeast would need a five-run sixth inning to win the game.
IU Southeast opened the scoring in the when Baylee Krueger hit a RBI single to score Kyndyl Olds and then Maggie Lubbehusen hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Schoenung.
The game would remain that way until the top of sixth. Weiss walked the first two batters of the inning and then gave up a RBI single by Grace Sweat. Molly Wallace followed with a single to tie the game off of Schoenung who was on in relief. A throwing error by Reece Gilliam on a stolen base allowed Jennifer Peffley to score and then Jaycee Head scored on a fielder's choice as she slid in ahead of the throw by Probus at third.
IU Southeast came right back in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game. Sydney Seger led off with a double and Kaitlyn Flowers followed with an inside-the-park home run to left for her first home run of the season to tie it.
Kyndyl Olds singled with two outs and Schoenung drew a walk. A routine grounder by Reecie Gilliam to shortstop was thrown away by Alaina Sears which allowed Olds and Schoenung to score and Gilliam advance to third. She scored on a wild pitch.
Schoeunung shut the door in the seventh for her second win of the day.
Sydney Seger had two hits in the win and Flowers had two RBI.
IU Southeast concludes conference play Friday when the Grenadiers travel to Brescia to take on the Bearcats at 4 p.m. ET.
