NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team opened the 2020 campaign with a 10-run, 16-hit performance in a 10-4 win over Georgetown College on Monday.
The Grenadiers (1-0) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when John Ullom singled to left to bring Jake Scott who had singled and reached second on a walk.
IU Southeast blew the game open with a five-run third inning. Clay Woeste got the inning started with a walk and then Tyler Mills singled and Woeste advanced to third when the ball was bobbled in center field.
Then Marco Romero grounded into a fielder's choice which brought Woeste in to score and Mills was forced out.
Later in the inning, Trevor MacDonald doubled to left-center to score Romero and Alec Saulman. Derek Wagner followed with a RBI double to left to score MacDonald and a RBI single by Ullom brought in Wagner from second to make it 6-0.
Georgetown got a run back in the top of the fourth when Joseph Wall doubled and scored on a RBI single by Jonathan Duarte.
IU Southeast tacked on three more runs in bottom of the inning. Woeste reached base after being hit by a pitch. Then Mills bunted down the third-base line and reached base on a hit. Marco Romero and Brody Tanksley each followed with RBI singles. Then MacDonald came through with a RBI single to score Romero.
After Georgetown scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings, the Grenadiers added one more run in the bottom of the seventh Daunte Decello doubled and advanced to third on a passed ball. A RBI groundout by Woeste brought in Decello for the 10th run of the game for the Grenadiers.
Grenadier pitching scattered seven hits and did not allow a baserunner until the fourth inning.
Conner Fries worked a perfect inning to earn his first win. Tyler Mills finished 3-for-4 with a run scored. Marco Romero went 2-for-3 with two walks, two RBI and two runs scored in the win. Trevor MacDonald, Daunte Decello and John Ullom each had two hits. Trevor MacDonald drove in three as well.
IU Southeast travels to defending national champion No. 1 Tennessee Wesleyan for a three-game series beginning on Friday.
