Box Score NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team fell 84-75 to Midway in a close contest on Tuesday.
Alex Maher scored a season-high 18 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Lauren Lambdin also scored 18 points in the contest, and Karly Sweeney scored 12 points in 17 minutes. Lettie Nice led the team with 10 rebounds.
IU Southeast (5-4, 2-1 RSC) started off strong, taking a quick 13-2 lead in the first quarter. Midway responded by going on an 8-0 run to shrink the IU Southeast lead to three. After the Grenadiers extended their lead to five, Midway scored the last seven points of the first quarter to take a 19-17 lead headed into the second.
The second quarter was a big one for Midway. After Brynna Blackburn hit a three to give IU Southeast a one-point lead, Midway answered with a 10-0 run to take a nine-point lead. Midway led by as many as 13 in the quarter, but an Emmy Ralph three-pointer at the buzzer cut the Midway lead to 44-34 at halftime.
The third quarter was where IU Southeast made their run. Trailing by 11, IU Southeast went on an 11-0 run to tie the game at 47. Alex Maher scored 8 of the 11 points during the Grenadier run. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter, entering the fourth quarter tied 62-62.
Midway scored the first basket of the fourth quarter and never again relinquished the lead. IU Southeast came back to within two on several occasions, but they could never tie or take the lead in the fourth. Midway scored the last five points of the game and went on to win 84-75.
IU Southeast shot 40.3 percent from the field and hit 15 of their 17 free throw attempts. Alex Maher and Lauren Lambdin went a combined 11-12 from the free throw line. The Grenadiers struggled from three-point range, however, going 6-25 from behind the arc.
The Grenadiers return to action next Tuesday at Asbury University.
