No. 24 Grenadiers Sweep Saint Francis Sunday

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The No. 24-ranked IU Southeast softball team defeated Santi Francis 10-5 and 2-1 on Sunday.

In game one, the Grenadiers fell behind 4-1 in the third inning as the Cougars scored runs in each of their first three innings off starter Hannah Ogg. Macie Zink got the Grenadiers on the board in the first inning when she led off with her third home run of the season to center.

IU Southeast (11-1) tied the contest with a three-run fourth inning. Dallas Henderson singled to center to score Reecie Gilliam. Kelsey Warman followed with single to bring in Miranda Miller. Lindsey Nelson tied the game with sacrifice safety squeeze bunt and Haley Smith scored.

Erin Templeman put the Grenadiers in front in the fourth inning when she hit a sacrifice fly to score Ellie Jackman who had singled and advanced to third on an error.

The Cougars (1-5) tied the game in the fifth inning when Tori Miller led off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. She scored on a sacrifice fly by Dani Karr.

The Grenadiers took the lead for good with a five-run fifth inning. The Grenadiers loaded the bases with three-straight walks. Then Kaitlyn Flowers singled to right to score Dallas Henderson. Madeline Probus followed with a bases-clearing triple that brought home Warman, Nelson and Flowers. After Reecie Gilliam struck out, Probus stole home.

Hannah Ogg worked six innings and allowed five runs on eight hits, she walked two and struck out for her sixth win.

Nine different Grenadiers recorded hits in the contest.

In game two, the Grenadiers and Cougars battled to scratch across a run as starters Gabby Mahoney and Mackenzie Rust shut down both offenses.

The Grenadiers scored a pair of runs in the third inning when Zink singled and scored on a RBI double by Ashtyn Sharp. Then Sharp advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball.

The Cougars cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth when Cassidy Ferrer singled to score Elandra Shafer who had reached on a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.

Saint Francis got runners the tying run to third with one out in the seventh. Ashley Kent led off with a double and moved to third after a sacrifice bunt. Hannah Ogg came in in relief of starter Gabby Mahoney and shut the door. She induced a groundout to the pitcher and Kelsey Warman threw home in time as Natalie Schapker tagged out Kent who was trying to score to end the game.

Gabby Mahoney worked six and a third innings and gave up one run on six hits. She waled a batter and struck out three for her first win of the year. Hannah Ogg got her first save.

Lindsey Nelson was 2-for-3 in the win.

IU Southeast hosts St. Francis (ill.) Tuesday at 2 p.m.
