Box Score NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The No. 19-ranked IU Southeast baseball team defeated WVU Tech 11-0 in five innings on Friday.
IU Southeast jumped ahead early in the contest, scoring a run in the opening inning. With two outs in the bottom of the first, Brody Tanksley laced a triple to center field. Pinch runner Trevor MacDonald scored on a wild pitch to give the Grenadiers a 1-0 lead.
The second inning was even more fruitful for the Grenadiers. With one out in the inning, Brandon Boxer reached first on a WVU Tech error. John Ullom followed up with a single, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch.
The inning continued as Daunte DeCello singled down the left field line to score Boxer and Ullom, giving IU Southeast a 3-0 lead. Brody Tanksley drove in IU Southeast's fourth run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right, scoring DeCello.
Derek Wagner kicked off the top of the third with a leadoff triple to put the Grenadier offense in business once again. WVU Tech threw the pinch runner out at the plate on a fielder's choice to keep it a 4-0 game, but that only lasted temporarily. With the bases loaded and two outs, Trevor Campbell delivered with a two-run double to extend the lead to 6-0 IU Southeast.
The Grenadiers once again loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth. This time it was Clay Woeste who came through, driving in a pair of runs on a single to left field. After four innings, the Grenadiers led 8-0.
The offensive onslaught continued in the fifth. Brody Tanksley drew a leadoff walk, and cleanup hitter Marco Romero launched a two-run home run to give the Grenadiers a 10-0 advantage. After drawing a walk and advancing to second on a wild pitch, Ben Berenda raced home on a Daunte DeCello RBI single to put the game out of reach at 11-0 in favor of IU Southeast.
IU Southeast starting pitcher Lane Oesterling threw a gem against WVU Tech, allowing one hit while striking out five batters in the five-inning contest. Five different Grenadiers recorded an RBI in the contest. Daunte DeCello led the team with two hits and three runs batted in.
No. 19 IU Southeast improved to 26-11 overall and 13-3 in RSC play. WVU Tech fell to 8-31 on the season and 6-13 in RSC games.
IU Southeast will hold their Senior Day festivities in between games on Saturday as the Grenadiers conclude their series against WVU Tech with an afternoon doubleheader.
