IU Southeast Athletics Mourns the Passing of Fuzzy Zoeller at Age 74

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Fuzzy Zoeller, southern Indiana golf legend and IU Southeast Athletics supporter, has passed away at the age of 74.

"IU Southeast Athletics is deeply saddened by the passing of Fuzzy Zoeller," IU Southeast Athletic Director Tod Bannister said. "He was a true friend of the Grenadier Athletics family. Not only did Fuzzy help resurrect our men's and women's golf programs, but he also was a champion for other sports in the department. The student-athletes that Fuzzy had the opportunity to impact will miss his impactful nature. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and those friends who played such an important part in our relationship with him."

Zoeller, born in New Albany, was a two-time major champion. He won the Masters in his first attempt in 1979, winning a three-player playoff. He also won the U.S. Open in 1984, his second major championship win.

"Southern Indiana lost a true legend today," IU Southeast Vice Chancellor of University Relations Joe Glover said. "Fuzzy Zoeller was more than a champion golfer — he was a proud Hoosier, a generous community leader, and someone who brought joy to every person he met. We are especially grateful for his steadfast support of the IU Southeast golf programs, which quite simply would not exist without his support and encouragement. His impact on our region, and on the game of golf, will be felt for generations. Our thoughts are with his family and all who were inspired by his remarkable life."

Zoeller was an integral part of the relaunch of the IU Southeast men's and women's golf programs. Covered Bridge and Champions Pointe, two of the courses Zoeller founded, serve as the home courses for the IU Southeast golf programs.

"We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Fuzzy," IU Southeast golf head coach Matt Graston said. "He has always been a great contributor and supporter of our golf community, but especially for junior golf. More importantly, he was a great person who would always take time to greet or carry on conversations with anyone. Southern Indiana has always been proud to have him represent and be one of us. It was an honor to have him be part of our IU Southeast golf family, and he will be missed by everyone."

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Fuzzy Zoeller.
