NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Patrick Yochum threw a complete game, two-hitter to lead IU Southeast past Alice Lloyd 21-1 in the Grenadiers' first KIAC tournament game on Thursday afternoon.
Yochum (2-2) gave up two hits and one run while striking out eight in his nine innings of work. He had a no-hitter through six innings before Shane Pack doubled to open the bottom of the seventh.
The Grenadiers (26-25) jumped on the board early with five runs in the top of the first. Brad Walker opened the scoring after reaching on an error, stealing second, advanced to third on a fielders' choice and scored when Framk Pluskota reached on an error by the pitcher Dylan Sullins (3-5).
The Grenadiers would add four more runs and finished the first scoring five runs on four hits in the inning.
IU Southeast pounded out 23 hits in the game. Eight Grenadiers had multi-hit games and three had three or more hits in the game. The 23 hits are the most the Grenadiers have hit
Catcher Louis Helmburg went four-for-five with a double in the game. A.J. Doyle went three-for-six with three RBI on the day.
The third and seventh innings were also big run-scoring frames for the Grenadiers. The third inning was highlighted by a two-run single by Trey Richard. The eighth inning saw IU Southeast scratch out nine runs on nine hits with only one extra-base hit, a Helmburg double, in the frame.
IU Southeast will face No.1 seed Point Park Friday at noon.
