WILMORE, Ky. – The IU Southeast women's tennis team lost a close match 5-4 to Ashford University (Iowa) in the KIAC Championship on Saturday.
IU Southeast (8-4) got off to a slow start in doubles play. Whitney Batliner and Dana Frank lost to Adriana Obando and Ursula Alvarado 8-4 and Maddie Ikerd and Katie Walsh lost by an 8-1 score to Jalyn Deering and Sara Vach.
Haley Jones and Katie Morrison kept the Grenadiers in the match with a 8-5 win over Rachel Gantz and Carolina Monterubbio.
In singles play, Whitney Batliner and Katie Walsh both lost close matches at No. 1 and 2 positions so it came down to the Grenadiers' four other singles players to rally. Dana Frank defeated Rachel Gantz 6-4, 6-4 and Katie Morrison defeated Ana Mayagoltia 6-3, 7-5. Katherine Clark rallied to pick up the victory over Monterubbio 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to tie the match at four points apiece.
Haley Jones dropped the first set against Jalyn Deering 7-6 (8-6). In the second set she fought off three match points to win in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-2). She was unable to win in the third set and lost in the final frame 6-4.
The loss ends the Grenadiers' streak of 15-straight KIAC tournament titles.
