Men's Tennis Wins First KIAC Title Since 2009 5-4 Over Asbury

WILMORE, Ky. – Freshman Jonathan James came back from a 6-3 deficit in a second set tiebreak to defeat Nesbert Vaval 13-11 and 6-4, 7-6 to clinch IU Southeast's first men's tennis conference title since 2009.

The Grenadiers (12-6) fell behind the Eagles 2-1 after doubles play as Shane Burke and Justin Batliner picked the lone win for IU Southeast 8-5 over Stephen Woods and Justin Westlund.

Shane Burke dispatched Woods easily 6-2, 6-2 and Bryson Mills defeated Deuce Gibson 6-3, 6-1.

Asbury picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 5 singles but Alex Martin defeated Nick Streibeck 7-5, 7-5 which left the No. 2 battle between Vaval and James as the deciding match.

IU Southeast head coach Joe Epkey earned a conference title victory in his first season as head coach.

The complete national tournament field will be released in early May. The 2014 NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship takes place from May 13-17 at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala.
