NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team opened its doubleheader with Asbury Saturday with a great offensive output in a 9-7 win but they only could put together five hits in a game two loss.
In game one, the Grenadiers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. IU Southeast opened the scoring as Josh Beams doubled and advanced to third on Frank Pluskota's single. A ground out by Jake Roberts scored Beams.
The Grenadiers (20-18, 6-8 KIAC) put up four runs in the second with the big blow coming when Beams tripled to right to score two.
IU Southeast would add four more runs in the bottom of the sixth but would hang on as the Eagles would push across five runs in the top of the seventh. Evan Bickett picked up his seventh save of the season.
Beams, Pluskota and Alex Potter each had two RBI in the win. Michael Fitzwater (2-4) pitched six and a third innings to pick up his second win.
In game two, Asbury capitalized on defensive lapses as the Grenadiers committed two first inning errors and spotted Asbury a 2-0 lead. The Eagles would win 4-2.
Back-to-back doubles in the second inning by Kyle Asher and Alex Potter would cut the lead in half, but the Grenadier offense could not gain any momentum against starter Brandon Ray.
Mason Lingafelter dropped to 3-3 on the season. The Grenadiers will host in the Eagles in another doubleheader to wrap up the season series on Monday at 3 p.m.
