NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader against Rio Grande on Sunday.
The Grenadiers (13-8, 1-3 KIAC) led 5-1 after four innings in game one, but could not lock down the victory.
IU Southeast scored twice in the second to take a 2-1 lead. After Chris Kemp was hit by a pitch and Jarret doubled to left, Grant Anderson singled to score Kemp. Alex Dapkus brought in Young on a single and wild throw from pitcher Ryan Christophel.
The Grenadiers scored one run in the third when Kemp walked with the bases loaded to bring in Marcus Howard.
A Trent Simpson single scored Dapkus and Howard in the fourth to make it 5-1.
After a walk, single and an error by Logan Coughlin, Rio Grande was down 5-2 in the sixth. A two-run double by Malduino Gonzalez made it 5-4. A single by Carlos Flores tied the game.
In the eighth, the RedStorm scored three times on one hit. Bryan Nacke walked two and hit three batters.
The Grenadiers went down in order in the bottom of the inning.
Simpson went 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Bryan Nacke took the loss in relief of Clint Chestnut.
In game two, walks and errors doomed the Grenadiers again. After consecutive walks to start the game, a single by Cody Blackburn put the RedStorm on the board first. An misplayed grounder by Grant Anderson brought in the second run.
Grenadier pitching was solid through much of the game. After the first inning, they allowed just one hit until the sixth inning.
IU Southeast had opportunities to tie the game, but grounded into three double plays which ended any chances at a rally.
Alex Dapkus, Marcus Howard and Trent Simpson each had two hits in the loss. Greg Laughlin took the loss. He worked three innings, allowed two runs and one hit and walked three.
