NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team used late-game heroics from Grant Anderson to pick up a 4-3 victory in game one of Monday's doubleheader. The Grenadiers fell 2-1 in game two.
IU Southeast (22-12, 7-5 KIAC) trailed 2-0 before tying the game in the fourth inning. Grant Anderson and Tyler Adams each drew bases loaded walks which scored Josh Beams and Logan Coughlin.
The Bearcats answered with a run in the sixth on a RBI single from Blane Thomas.
The Grenadiers capitalized on a Brescia error to pull out the win late. After Alex Dapkus reached base on a perfect bunt, a wild throw by catcher Aaron King moved him to third and allowed Josh Beams to reach base and advance to second. A Trent Simpson RBI single tied the game and set the stage for Anderson. He singled to left to Beams and win it.
Evan Bickett picked up his first win of the year, pitching a hitless seventh and striking out one. Clint Chestnut started the game and was solid, working five innings and allowing two runs on two hits. He walked five and struck out six.
In game two, the Grenadiers' offense could not get going. They were hitless until the fifth inning when Coughlin singled.
Trent Simpson gave up two runs in five-plus innings of work. Daniel Lokesak hit a home run to left to open the scoring in the fifth. In the sixth, Justin Cessna led off the inning by hitting a double to end Simpson's day. Cessna would come around to score after a couple of wild pitches by Bryan Nacke.
Simpson gave five hits and two runs while walking two and striking out three.
The Grenadiers' only run came in the sixth when Alex Dapkus doubled to score Adams.
IU Southeast threatened in the final frame with runners on first and second and two out but Nick Pope popped out to end it.
Christian McHatton got the complete-game win.
IU Southeast hosts No. 18 Campbellsville Tuesday at 5 p.m.
