NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Trent Simpson hit a game-tying two-run double and Matt Volz hit a go-ahead single as the Grenadiers rallied to defeat Indiana Wesleyan in game two of their doubleheader Wednesday.
In game one, the Grenadiers fell behind 4-0 after four innings. The IU Southeast offense struggled to string together hits. Only three players combined to total the Grenadiers' six hits. Tyler Adams, Cody Maloon and Matt Volz each recorded two hits for IU Southeast.
IU Southeast (10-8) got on the board in the fifth when Kyle Asher brought in Volz on a groundout, who had doubled. In the seventh, Volz hit an RBI single to score Kainin Lewis, but that was all the offense that the Grenadiers could muster.
In game two, IU Southeast trailed 6-0 after a six-run first inning for the Wildcats. The Grenadiers responded with three runs in the bottom of the third. After Zach Reboulet singled and Kyle Goodman walked, both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Singles by Trent Simpson and Clay Benefield brought them around to score. Kyle Asher walked to bring in Jordan Branz to cut the lead in half.
Indiana Wesleyan would add one run each in the top of the fourth and the fifth, but the IU Southeast offense was rolling by then.
In the fourth, Simpson hit another RBI single and Benefield hit a two-run single.
In fifth, after walks to Tyler Adams and Zach Reboulet, Simpson came through again with a two-out, two-run single to tie the game. Matt Volz followed with an RBI single to score Simpson.
Bryan Nacke worked one and two thirds innings of relief to get the win. Jarrod Messex pitched a hitless seventh inning to earn his league-leading fifth save.
Simpson went 3-for-4 with four RBI in the win and Benefield finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI.
