Grenadiers Sweep Doubleheader From Golden Bears Friday

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team opened a weekend series with KIAC undefeated West Virginia Tech Friday by sweeping the Golden Bears 4-2 and 7-1.

In game one, the Grenadiers got on the board in the bottom of the first when Kyle Asher singled to score Matt Volz who had doubled to left-center.

The Golden Bears would take a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth but the Grenadiers would rally once again. Volz drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game.

In the sixth, the Grenadiers took the lead for the second and final time in the game. Logan Coughlin walked and advanced first to third on a Tyler Adams single. Coughlin would later score on a single by Cody Maloon. Maloon scored when Trent Simpson drew another bases-loaded walk.

Alex Schoettmer earned his second win of the year in relief of starter Spencer Drake who worked five innings and gave up two runs on two hits and struck out eight. Schoettmer worked a scoreless inning and gave up two hits while walking a batter and striking out one.

In game two, the Grenadiers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first. The big blows came from back-to-back doubles by Tyler Adams and Cody Maloon which brought in three of the five runs.

That was more than enough for Greg Laughlin, who allowed one hit through his first six innings of work. He surrendered one run in the seventh, but finished with a complete-game win. He gave up a run on three hits, walked one and struck out four for his third win of the season.

Matt Volz went 2-for-3 and Trent Simpson and Cody Maloon each knocked in two runs.

The Grenadiers (12-8, 6-0 KIAC) conclude the series with the Golden Bears tomorrow at 1 p.m.
