NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team used a dominant pitching performance from starter Ryne Underwood to take the first game of Saturday's doubleheader 1-0 to win the series over West Virginia Tech.
Underwood, Bryan Nacke and Jarrod Messex combined on a six-hit shutout. The only run in the game came in the bottom of the third when Kyle Asher drew a bases-loaded walk which brought in Jordan Branz.
Starter Ryne Underwood worked five innings and gave up five hits and a walk while striking out five. Messex earned his eighth save.
Trent Simpson went 3-for-3 and had the game's lone extra-base hit, a double in the fifth.
In game two, the Grenadiers trailed 3-0 before getting on the scoreboard in the fourth. Cody Maloon hit a RBI single to open the scoring for IU Southeast.
The Grenadiers (13-9, 7-1 KIAC) had runners on second and third with two out in the sixth but Maloon flew out and the Grenadiers remained down 3-1.
IU Southeast threatened again in the final frame, after back-to-back walks to Zach Reboulet and Kyle Goodman. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position and then Trent Simpson walked to load the bases. Matt Volz followed and struck out and Branz hit a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to one but Kyle Asher lined out to left to end the game with a 3-2 decision.
Starter Brian Cherrington took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits in one and two thirds innings of work.
