Laughlin and Asher Shine In Sunday Sweep of Point Park

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Greg Laughlin hurled a five-hit shutout in game one and Kyle Asher ended the day with a walk-off single as IU Southeast swept a doubleheader against Point Park on Sunday.

Clay Benefield got the Grenadiers on the board early when he hit a two-run home run to left center in the bottom of the first.

The Grenadiers (5-5, 2-0 KIAC) added runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. In the fourth, Logan Coughlin singled and later scored when Matt Volz singled and leftfielder Shane Conley misplayed the ball.

In the fifth, Coughlin doubled to score Benefield who had singled. In the sixth, Demetrius Moorer lost a fly ball in the sun which allowed Kainin Lewis to score.

Laughlin worked all seven innings, he struck out four and walked a batter. Benefield went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Logan Coughlin, Kyle Goodman and Trent Simpson each had a pair of hits in the win.

In game two, the Grenadiers trailed 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh. IU Southeast had two on and two out, and then the chaos began.

Matt Volz stole second and the ball rolled away from second baseman Edwin Covas so Kyle Goodman headed home from third. The throw from second was off line and Goodman was safe, and Volz advanced to third. Tyler Adams hit a single to left to bring in Volz to tie the game.

Clay Benefield reached base on a misplayed grounder which moved Adams to second and Kyle Asher hit a walk-off single to right to complete the comeback.

Chris Kemp picked up the win, working one and a third innings of hitless relief.

Tyler Adams went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the win.

The Grenadiers complete the series with the Pioneers Monday at noon.
