No. 25 Grenadiers Knock Off No. 16 Campbellsville 7-4

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The No.25-ranked IU Southeast baseball team jumped out to a 6-2 lead and hung on for a 7-4 win over No. 16 Campbellsville on Tuesday.

The Grenadiers (28-11) opened the scoring when Kyle Asher hit his second home run of the year to center to make it 1-0.

The Tigers (29-13) tied the game in the top of the fourth with back-to-back singles.

IU Southeast responded with a run in the bottom of the frame. Kyle Goodman walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then stole third. A Trent Simpson RBI single put the Grenadiers in front once again.

Casey Scott hit an RBI single to bring in Romello Carbuccia and tie the game at 2 for Campbellsville.

In the sixth, Trent Simpson singled, Matt Volz reached on a bunt base hit and Kyle Asher walked to load the bases with one out. Logan Couglin hit a hard shot to short which was bobbled by Cody Ericksen. Pinch runner Brad Walker and Volz scored.

Clay Benefield hit a pop up to foul territory which was caught out of play by the first base dugout, both runners advanced which allowed Asher to score. A Jordan Branz single brought in Coughlin and gave the Grenadiers a 6-2 lead.

Campbellsville would cut into the lead with a run in the each of the seventh and eighth innings. IU Southeast got one run back in the eighth when Volz tripled and Asher followed with a double.

Jarrod Messex shut the door in the ninth for his ninth save of the year. Ryne Underwood (5-0) earned his fifth win of the campaign, working six and two-thirds. He gave up three runs on six hits, walked a batter and struck out four.

Kyle Asher went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Matt Volz went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

IU Southeast hosts Cincinnati Christian on Friday and Saturday. Friday's games begin at 5 p.m.
