NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The Grenadiers won a tightly contested 5-4 match over Rose-Hulman Thursday afternoon.
The No. 3 doubles team of Jacob Rankin and Bryson Mills gave the Grenadiers a quick 1-0 lead with an 8-4 victory. At the No. 2 position Jonathan James and Chris Braun found themselves trailing 7-3 before mounting a huge comeback to take the match 9-8(2). With IU Southeast leading 2-0 the No. 1 doubles team of Nick Roby and Trent Wallace fell by a narrow defeat 9-8(5).
Heading into singles play the Grenadiers needed to win three of the six singles matches for the win.
Trent Wallace fell at No. 2 which evened the match at 2-2. Jacob Rankin made quick work of his match in his best showing all year winning 6-2,6-0. Chris Braun was next to finish winning his match 7-5, 6-1 at the number 6 position. The Grenadiers needed just one more victory to clinch the match. Bryson Mills fell 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 and Nick Roby fell 4-6, 6-3, 4-6 at No.1 spot. Junior Jonathan James was the deciding match on in which he dominated his third set winning his match 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 clinching the match for the Grenadiers bringing them to 8-8 on the year.
The Grenadiers host Asbury Saturday at 1 p.m.
