LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The IU Southeast men's tennis team finished its fall season on a high note taking down Division II Bellarmine on Friday afternoon. Brock Winchell and Daulton Fensler got things started with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles but the top two doubles positions went to Bellarmine each by a score of 8-5.
Trailing 2-1 heading into singles play, the Grenadiers needed to win four singles matches to claim the victory and they did just that. With a very strong performance at the top of the lineup Garrett Fensler won 6-1,6-2 at the No. 1 spot while Brock Winchell finished at nearly the exact same time with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 2 position. Daulton Fensler was the next match off the court with a 6-3,6-3 win at No. 6 to put IU Southeast up 4-2. Sam Venter was the clinching match at No. 5 singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win to give the Grenadiers the victory.
With the match already decided and Bradley Cross and Samir Shammas still playing at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots both had lost their first sets but came back to win the second pushing the final two matches to third set tiebreaks. Bellarmine was able to prevail in both to pick up their final two wins making the final score 5-4 IU Southeast.
"I was very pleased to see us comeback from being down 2-1 after doubles," head coach Joe Epkey said.. "Our guys showed a lot of fight and determination with great focus from beginning to end. It's a great way to end our fall season and should keep us motivated throughout the winter to continue improving so that we can put ourselves in position to accomplish all our goals for the year."
The men conclude the fall season with a 3-1 dual match record. Next for the Grenadiers will be a doubleheader with Ball State in February.
