Grenadiers Split Saturday Doubleheader With Asbury

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The No. 22-ranked Grenadier baseball team took the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader 5-1 over Asbury before falling 9-8 in the nightcap.

The Grenadiers (7-5, 3-1 RSC) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning after spotting Asbury a 1-0 lead in the top of the frame. After Matt Volz singled, Nicholas Lugo followed with a triple to tie the game. Richard Rodriguez brought him in with an RBI single.

IU Southeast added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth as the Grenadiers capitalized with the bases loaded. Richard Rodriguez came in to score after a wild pitch and Tanner Leenknecht followed with a two-run double.

Ryne Underwood worked a complete game to earn the win. He struck out 11 and walked a batter.

In game two, the Grenadiers led 5-1 after two innings but Asbury chipped away and eventually took the lead with a four-run fourth inning. Asbury extended the lead to 9-7 before IU Southeast answered with a run in bottom of the sixth.

IU Southeast was able to get the tying run to third base with one out after Hector Marmol tripled to right. But Rodriguez struck out and Clay Benefield flew out to right-center.

Logan Barnes and Hector Marmol each had two hits for IU Southeast in the loss.
