UPLAND, Ind. – The IU Southeast offense was red-hot in an 11-3 victory at Taylor University on Wednesday.
The Grenadiers (3-1) pounded out 14 hits and five Grenadiers had two-hit games. Cody Maloon, Nicholas Lugo and Tanner Leenknecht all hit home runs in the contest.
IU Southeast opened the scoring in the top of the first when Nolan Rogers singled and later scored on a passed ball. A sacrifice fly from Lugo brought in Richard Rodriguez who had reached on a walk.
Cody Maloon's two-run home run in the third inning gave the Grenadiers a 4-1 lead but Taylor would cut into the deficit in the fourth when Jared Adkins hit a two-run single to left.
The Grenadiers scored three run each in the sixth and eight inning to blow the game open. In the sixth, Lugo led off with a home run to right for his first home run of the season. Tanner Leenknecht singled and later scored on a throwing error by the third baseman Brett Lawson and Reyni Olivero, who reached on Lawson's error, scored on a throwing error by shortstop Josh Lane.
In the eighth, Nolan Rogers had an RBI single and Josh Beams drove in two runs with a single to right.
Tanner Leenknecht put an exclamation point on the day with a solo shot to left in the ninth inning for his first home run of the year.
Grant Bradley got the start for IU Southeast and worked three and 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on two hits while walking four.
The rest of the IU Southeast bullpen allowed four hits in relief and Brandon Nylin and Jacob Frankel each struck out two in one inning of work for both.
Nolan Rogers, Nicholas Lugo, Josh Beams, Tanner Leenknecht and Richard Rodriguez each had two hits in the win.
IU Southeast and St. Xavier (Ill.) will play a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind. The games both days begin at noon.
