RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Ryne Underwood pitched a complete-game, one hit shutout to open a key River States Conference series at Rio Grande on Thursday.
Underwood (3-1) allowed just four baserunners, one hit, two hit batsmen and a walk, and struck out eight in his nine innings of work.
He did not allow a baserunner until the third inning when Caden Cluxton reached on a walk. Rio Grande runners were in scoring position just twice in the contest.
IU Southeast (16-6, 7-0 RSC) scratched out the game's only run in the fifth when Jordan Branz singled to short and advanced to second on a bunt hit by Reyni Olivero. Richard Rodriguez singled through the hole at short to bring in Branz after Daniel Brescia and Josh Beams both lined out.
That was enough for Underwood, who cruised through the contest. He recorded 12 groundouts to just three flyouts in the game on 94 pitches.
Cody Maloon had two of the Grenadiers' eight hits in the contest.
IU Southeast concludes the series with the RedStorm Friday at noon with a doubleheader.
