Four-Run 8th Inning Sends Grenadiers To Sweep Of Brescia

LOUISVILLE – The IU Southeast baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Brescia Monday morning with a 5-1 win at St. Xavier High School in Louisville.

Brescia (7-23, 6-9 RSC) scored first in the top of the second when the Bearcats recorded four straight singles. Colton Hurt had the RBI single to score Yonelle Firebrace. Starter Trevor Reynolds was able to limit the damage to just one run and took a no decision.

The Grenadiers (25-7, 14-1 RSC) tied the game in the third when starter Antonio Barrerra unleashed a wild pitch to score Jordan Branz from third.

IU Southeast threatened in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings but could not score. The Grenadiers left nine men on base in the contest.

In the bottom of the eighth, Nicholas Lugo doubled to left-center and then stole third. Brody Tanksley reached on a walk to put runners at first and third with two outs. Reyni Olivero, running for Tanksley, got caught in a rundown and Lugo scored while Olivero advanced to second on the throw home to give the Grenadiers the lead.

Jordan Branz followed with a single to left to score Olivero and later in the inning Daniel Brescia hit a two-run single to left to extend the lead to 5-1.

Jack Drew got the win in one inning of relief. He allowed one hit and struck out one. Jordan Branz went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Richard Rodriguez had two hits in the win.
