Grenadiers Split Doubleheader With No. 15 Bryan

DAYTON, Tenn. – The IU Southeast baseball team split a doubleheader with No. 19 Bryan College taking game one 10-8 and dropping game two 8-7.

In game one, IU Southeast got on the board in the top of the first when Derek Wagner hit his first collegiate home run to left to make it 2-0.

IU Southeast (2-2) blew the game open with a five-run second inning. The Grenadiers loaded the bases on singles by Daniel Brescia, Jordan Branz and Clay Woeste. Then Santrel Farmer recorded his second hit of the day when he hit a two-run single to right. Woeste would score on a fielder's choice and Farmer scored on a RBI groundout by Wagner. A RBI single by Cody Maloon made it 7-0.

In the third inning, Brescia doubled and later scored on a wild pitch.

Bryan cut into the lead in the fifth when Jacob Justice hit a three-run home run to make the lead 9-6.

After IU Southeast added another run in the top of seventh, Bryan plated a pair in the bottom of the frame and had the tying run at the plate with one out. Kyle Hawkins got Justice to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

Jack Wohlert (2-0) worked five innings to earn his second win of the year. He gave up five runs on four hits while striking out four and walking one. Kyle Hawkins earned his second save of the season by working a scoreless seventh inning.

Santrel Farmer had four hits and drove in three runs, Daniel Brescia had three hits and Derek Wagner drove in the three in the win.

In game two, IU Southeast fell behind 7-0 after a seven-run second innings for the Lions. Jacob Justice hit a grand slam in the inning to break the game open, his second home run of the day.

IU Southeast got back in the game a four-run fourth inning. A two-run single by Brescia got IU Southeast on the board and two passed balls scored Brescia and Dalton Mitchell.

In the fifth, IU Southeast cut the lead to 7-6 after an RBI double by Maloon scored Woeste and a RBI single by Brescia brought in Maloon.

The Lions answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single by David Scoggins.

Dalton Drexler brought the Grenadiers back within one run when he scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh. IU Southeast had the tying run at third and go-ahead run at second with two outs but Jesus Astudillo struck out Jordan Branz to end the game.

Daniel Brescia, Cody Maloon and Derek Wagner each had two hits in the loss and Brescia drove in three runs.

The series concludes Saturday at noon.
