(RV) IU Southeast Baseball Splits Doubleheader With No. 19 Cumberlands (Ky.)

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The IU Southeast baseball team opened the 2019 campaign Saturday by splitting a doubleheader at No. 19 University of the Cumberlands.

In game one, both offenses were held in check by great performances by the starting pitchers in the contest. The starters combined to allow one run on five hits and both worked into the sixth inning.

IU Southeast (1-1) did not have a baserunner in scoring position until the fourth inning when Dalton Drexler reached second on a passed ball but Cody Maloon flied out to end the threat.

In the top of the 5th, leftfielder Dalton Mitchell hit a home run to break the ice for the first hit of the contest for the Grenadiers. Clay Woeste would single to short later in the inning but that would be all of the hits in the game for IU Southeast.

One run was enough for starter Jack Wohlert (1-0) who worked five and a third innings and gave up two hits while striking out four and walking one. Andrew Yates worked an inning of relief and Kyle Hawkins earned his first save of the season when he retired the final two batters of the game.

In game two, the Grenadiers were slowed by a solid outing from Patriot starter Josh Avila, who scattered six hits and allowed one run while striking out five in a complete-game win.

The Grenadiers fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first when the Patriots got back-to-back RBI singles from Jose Rojas and Marquis Orozco after two-straight walks to start the inning.

After adding another run on a RBI triple from Pedro Nazario in the fourth, a pair of RBI doubles in the fifth by J.C. Santos and Bryan Leef sealed the game for Cumberlands.

Clay Woeste hit a solo home run in the top of the 7th for the Grenadiers. Starter Grant Bradley took the loss. He gave up two runs on two hits and walked three in an inning and a third of work. Derek Wagner had two hits in the loss.

IU Southeast travels to Bryan College on Friday for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday.
