LEXINGTON, Ky. - The IU Southeast women's tennis opened conference play Friday with a 7-2 win over Midway.
The women's tennis team started off the match against Midway at the Lexington Tennis Club on Friday afternoon with a 3-0 lead after doubles play. The No. 1 tandem of Lauren Winchell and Alexis Applegate put on a dominating performance with an 8-0 victory to start off the match. No. 3 doubles Jeannie Soto and Emily Mitchell were next off the court winning 8-4. Finishing the doubles sweep Anne Mattox and Hallee Miller won 8-5.
"I was very excited for Emily Mitchell who stepped into our lineup after a long absence from the sport and was able to win her first collegiate match.," Coach Epkey said. "She has been a great addition and we are so lucky to have her during this spring season."
In singles action the Grenadiers won four of the six singles positions dropping a three-set singles match at No. 3 and a competitive second set at No. 6 singles. Lauren Winchell and Alexis Applegate lead the way at the top of the lineup with convincing wins as well as Hallee Miller at the No. 5 position. Jeannie Soto was able to make a comeback after losing her first set 4-6 then winning the second 6-0. After trailing 7-9 in the third set tiebreak she was able to come back and win it 11-9 to give IU Southeast the 7-2 victory to open conference play.
Next up for the Grenadiers they will take on NCAA Division 1 opponent Butler at home on Sunday, March 17 at 3PM.
