OWENSBORO, Ky. - The IU Southeast women's tennis team picked up a pair of wins on Friday in Owensboro taking down Kentucky Wesleyan and Brescia. IU Southeast was shorthanded but managed wins at every singles and doubles position that competed.
In the first match IU Southeast earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Needing only three wins to clinch the match in singles the Grenadiers made sure there was no doubt winning all five positions played.
In the afternoon the women took on conference opponent Brescia and improved their record to 2-0 in conference play with a 7-2 victory over the Bearcats. Already starting the match surrendering two spots the women took care of business at the remaining positions. In doubles action Alexis Applegate and Lauren Winchell had a solid win at No. 1 with an 8-4 victory and Hallee Miller and Anne Mattox had a dominating 8-0 performance at #2.
The strong play at the top of the lineup continued with Lauren Winchell prevailing in the closest match of the day with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 victory at No. 1 singles and Alexis Applegate put on a strong performance not dropping a single game at No. 2 singles.
"I am very proud of our girls today, knowing that we were giving up a couple positions in each match we still came out and took care of business and still managed 2 convincing wins," head coach Joe Epkey said.
