NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team defeated Midway University 4-2 in the series opener on Thursday.
After the game was delayed by about 90 minutes due to snow, IU Southeast fell behind when Midway scratched across a run in the top of the second. Koy Lindsey led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Courtesy runner Tyrin Orr scored on a RBI groundout to short by Matthew Olson.
IU Southeast (11-7, 2-2 RSC) took the lead with a three-run second inning and they did not record a base hit. In fact, the Grenadiers did not have a hit until the bottom of the third when Jordan Branz doubled.
The Grenadiers took advantage of eight walks in the first two innings by Eagle pitchers.
In the second, Daunte Decello walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Branz. Derek Wagner and Cody Maloon each drew bases loaded walks to give IU Southeast a 3-1 lead.
IU Southeast added another run in the third after Branz doubled. Then Santrel Farmer followed with a RBI single through the hole at shortstop.
Grenadier starter Jack Wohlert cruised in the middle innings of the game until the seventh when he had to work out of a two on, with no out one out jam. But he recorded three-straight outs to end the threat.
He worked seven and two thirds innings, giving up seven hits and two runs. He walked one and struck out four to move to 4-0 on the season. Kyle Hawkins earned his fourth save by recording the final four outs of the contest.
