NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team dropped the series opener to Asbury 7-1 on Friday.
The Eagles (17-16, 8-9 RSC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a four-run second inning. After back-to-back singles started the inning, Joe Williams hit a two-run single to center to open the scoring. Later in the inning Paul Haupt drove in two with a single.
IU Southeast (26-13, 14-5 RSC) threatened in the third inning when Clay Woeste hit a two-out triple but he was stranded at third.
The Grenadiers had runners at first and second with one out in the sixth but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.
IU Southeast got on the board in the 9th when Santrel Farmer hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Brody Tanksley who had walked and adacned to third on a Jordan Branz double.
Jack Wohlert (7-1) took the loss. Will McDonald (5-2) earned the complete-game win. He gave up three hits and a run while walking three and striking out seven.
The series concludes Saturday at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader.
