Grenadiers Split Doubleheader With Asbury Saturday

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – IU Southeast concluded its weekend series with Asbury by splitting a doubleheader with the Eagles on Satuday, taking game one 3-1 before falling 3-2 in the nightcap.

In game one, the Grenadiers got a dominant pitching performance from freshman Chas Adams, who move to 5-2 on the season. He worked eight and a third innings and gave up one run on six hits while walking two and striking out five.

The Grenadiers (27-14, 15-6 RSC) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Cody Maloon walked and stole second and then scored on a RBI single by Brody Tanksley.

IU Southeast added another run in the second when Santrel Farmer singled to right to score Jordan Branz who had singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.

Asbury (18-17, 9-10 RSC) cut the lead in half in the third inning when CJ Compton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. A 6-4-3 double play ended the threat.

IU Southeast turned three double plays which ended the Eagles' attempts at rallies.

Cody Maloon a hit a RBI single in the fifth to bring in Daunte Decello who had been hit by pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.

The Eagles threatened to cut into the lead in the eight when Matthew Baker led off the inning with a walk. Blake Lambdin ran for him and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Paul Haupt singled to left but Lambdin was thrown out at the plate by Dalton Mitchell to end the inning.

Two singles in the ninth chased Chas Adams but Jacob Frankel got a fly out and a ground out to end the game for his second save of the season.

In game two, IU Southeast struck first when Santrel Farmer singled to score Tyler Mills and Derek Wagner.

The Eagles responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Trevor Campbell singled to score Lambdin and Haupt hit a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game.

Asbury recorded the go-ahead run in the seventh with CJ Compton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Grenadiers got runners to the corners with two outs in the bottom of the seventh as Clay Woeste was able to steal third but a groundout to the shortstop by Brody Tanksley on a close play at first ended the game.

Cody Maloon had two hits in the loss. Kyle Hawkins (4-2) took the loss and Alex Lush worked six and two thirds to earn the win while Jacob Cervantes recorded the one-out save.

IU Southeast hosts No. 21 Georgetown Monday at 5 p.m.
