Women's Tennis defeats IU East 5-3

NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The IU Southeast women's tennis team clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming River States Conference Women's Tennis Tournament with a 5-3 win over IU East Wednesday.

The women's tennis team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after sweeping all 3 doubles matches against IUE. The pairings of Jeannie Soto/Camille Greenwell at No. 2 doubles and Hallee Miller/Anne Mattox at No. 3 doubles won by scores of 8-4 and 8-6 to start things off. Lauren Winchell/Alexis Applegate lead 7-4 at No. 1 doubles before giving up a few games and eventually earning the win 9-8(5) win in a tiebreak.

In singles action Camille Greenwell was the first off the court with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 3 to give the Grenadiers their 4th point. Lauren Winchell dropped her match at No. 1 singles in three sets before Alexis Applegate in her last home match as a Grenadier was able to come back from losing the first set to clinch the match for the Grenadiers winning 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. Anne Mattox and Hallee Miller both dropped their singles matches while Jeannie Soto split sets but was unable to finish due to darkness.

"I am so proud and happy for our girls, we have been working hard at doubles all year and it really paid off today," head coach Joe Epkey said. "IU East is a very good team that we were picked to finish behind so it was nice to get the win and finish the conference regular season on a high note."

Next up for the Grenadiers is the River States Conference Tournament at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Cincinnati, Ohio on April 26th and 27th.
