OWENSBORO, Ky. – The IU Southeast baseball team took game one of a Saturday night doubleheader 8-4 to clinch its second-straight River States Conference regular-season championship and an automatic berth to the NAIA Tournament.
The Grenadiers (32-16, 19-6 RSC) opened the scoring in the top of the first when Clay Woeste led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Daniel Brescia hit a sacrifice fly to left to make it 1-0.
The Bearcats answered with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Steven Sandafur recorded a RBI single and, later inning the inning, Yonnelle Firebrace brought in a pair of runs with a single.
IU Southeast tied the game in the third when Woeste doubled to score Daunte Decello from first. Daniel Brescia came through with another sacrifice fly to score Woeste after he stole third.
The Grenadiers took the lead for good when Jordan Branz doubled to drive in Brescia.
In the seventh, Brescia drove in his third run of the game on a RBI groundout. The eighth inning saw IU Southeast add another run on an error by the leftfielder Nathaniel Harris.
Cody Maloon had a RBI double and Brody Tanksley drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to pad the lead in the ninth inning.
Chas Adams worked six innings to earn the win. He gave up three runs on five hits, walked one and struck out five.
Clay Woeste was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Brescia and Maloon each had two hits in the win.
