CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – The IU Southeast baseball team lost 7-3 to No. 6 seed Midway University to open the RSC Baseball Championship tournament on Thursday.
The Grenadiers (34-17) opened the scoring in the top of the second when Derek Wagner hit a solo home run to left for his seventh home run of the year.
But the Eagles (26-25) scored the next five runs in the contest over the following three innings to take a commanding lead that the Grenadiers could not overcome.
In the bottom of the second inning the Eagles had runners at second and third with one out and tied the game on a fielder's choice.
They took the lead in the third inning when Graham Luttor led off the inning with a home run and Noah Marion hit a RBI double later inning the inning to make it 3-1.
Midway scored another pair of runs in the fourth when Luttor and Kurt Paldino had back-to-back RBI doubles.
The Grenadiers had chances to get back in the contest but three double plays by the Eagles killed the rallies. Derek Wagner hit his second home run of the game to lead off the seventh and the Grenadiers added another run in the eight on a RBI single by Jordan Branz.
Kyle Hawkins (5-3) took the loss for the Grenadiers. Brandon Aoki (7-3) worked seven innings to get the win. He gave up two runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out two.
Brody Tanksley and Wagner each had three hits in the loss.
IU Southeast will face the loser of the Point Park-Asbury contest Friday at 11 a.m.
