NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The No. 22 IU Southeast baseball completed a three-game sweep of West Virginia Tech to open conference play, defeating the Golden Bears 25-8 in seven innings and 7-4 on Sunday. With the wins, IU Southeast is the lone unbeaten in NAIA baseball.
In game one, the Grenadiers (12-0. 3-0 RSC) scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings before blowing the game open with a seven-run third inning and an 11-run fourth inning.
In the third, Jake Scott and Daunte Decello each had two-run doubles, Alec Saulman had a RBI single, Clay Woeste recorded a sacrifice fly and Marco Romero drove in a run on a misplay in the infield.
In the fourth, Clay Woeste hit his first home run of the year in style when he hit a grand slam to left on a 3-2 count. He also had a RBI single earlier in the inning to drive in five runs in the frame.
Daunte Decello started the scoring with a RBI single. John Ullom had a two-run RBI triple in the inning as well.
In the top of the fifth inning, Kent Rooklin answered Woeste's grand slam with one of his own.
Drew Hensley got two runs back in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run to left for his first home run of the season.
Clay Woete finished the game 3-for-4 with six RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base and Daunte Decello was 3-for-3 with four runs scored, four RBi, a walk and a stolen base.
In game two, Ben Berenda opened the scoring with a solo home run to center field for his second home run of the year.
After the Golden Bears took the lead 2-1 in the fourth, IU Southeast answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning when Jake Scott hit a massive home run to left for his first of the season and as a Grenadier.
WVU Tech (5-12, 0-3 RSC) tied the game in the top of the fifth but the Grenadiers took the lead back for good in the bottom of the inning.
Clay Woeste stole second and moved to third on a single. Marcp Romero got a squeeze bunt down and Woeste slide in ahead of the tag to give the Grenadiers the lead. Then Brody Tanksley followed with a two-run triple to center.
In the sixth, John Ullom hit a solo home run to center for his first home run of the season.
Jacob Frankel worked two and a third inning for his first win of the season. He allowed one run on two hits and struck out five.
Brody Tanksley and Jake Scott each went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two driven in.
In Sunday's doubleheader the Grenadiers recorded 32 runs, 28 hits and hit five home runs in the two games combined.
IU Southeast travels to No. 25 Campbellsville on Wednesday.
