NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Marco Romero drove in five runs and Clay Woeste drove in four as IU Southeast completed the sweep of IU Kokomo 12-3 on Sunday.
IU Southeast (13-11, 6-0 RSC) opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first. Clay Woeste drew a walk, stole second and third and scored on a on a groundout by Marco Romero. Jake Scott singled to score Andronico Recasas who had stolen second, and then Scott stole second. He scored on a single by Ben Berenda.
IU Southeast added a run in the second when John Ullom led off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Mills. A sacrifice fly by Woeste extended the lead to 4-0.
IU Kokomo. (7-9, 3-3 RSC) got a run back in the third inning bu the Grenadiers added a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth innings to put the game away.
In the fourth, Ullom walked and stole second. Clay Woeste singled to score Ullom. Later in the inning, Romero came through with a RBI single to bring in Woeste.
In the sixth, Brayden Hazelwood and Matt Monahan led off with singles. After Brody Tanksley flew out, Romero singled to bring in Hazelwood and Monahan.
The Cougars scored twice in the seventh but the Grenadiers responded with a four-run bottom of the inning.
Clay Woete had a two-run single, which was followed by a RBI single by Monahan. Marco Romero drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Woeste.
Hunter Kloke and Lane Oesterling combined for eight innings and gave up three runs, Kloke went the front four and allowed one runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out four. Oesterling allowed two runs on four hits in four innings while striking out three. Freshman Gavin Knust worked a perfect ninth with a strikeout to end the contest.
Matt Monahan was 3-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI, Clay Woeste and Marco Romero each were 2-for-4 and Ben Berenda was 2-for-5.
IU Southeast hosts Pikeville Tuesday at 4 p.m.
