NEW ALBANY, Ind. – No. 11 IU Southeast led 5-3 in the eighth inning before losing the lead and rallying in the bottom of the inning for five runs to defeat Pikeville 10-8 on Tuesday.
John Ullom and Marco Romero each went 3-for-3, Romero had two doubles and a RBI while Ullom drove in three.
IU Southeast (14-11) took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when Clay Woeste singled to bring in Ullom. Later in the inning, Matt Monahan hit a sacrifice fly to score Ian Taylor.
The Grenadiers added one run in the fifth and a pair in the seventh. In the fifth inning, Romero singled and advanced to second on a single by Jake Scott. Ian Taylor reached base on a fielder's choice and Romero scored.
In the seventh, Romero led off with a double and scored on a throwing error by Tyler Maynard. John Ullom singled to center to score Scott who had reached base on the error.
Pikeville (4-14) roared back to take a 7-5 lead in the eighth inning. Cam Marushi tied the game with a two-run home run to left, his second of the season. Later in the inning, Noah Helton doubled to left-center to bring in Trae McLemore and Jared Kirkman.
But the Grenadiers answered right back in the bottom of the inning. Clay Woeste led off with a walk and stole second and third. Matt Monahan reached on a walk and Brody Tanksley was hit to load the bases. Then Marco Romero was walked to cut the lead to one. Jake Scott tied the game with a sacrifice fly.
Then Ullom cleared the bases with a two-run triple.
Trevor Reynolds (3-1) worked one and a third innings to earn his third win. He allowed two runs on four hits while striking out two.
IU Southeast travels to Ohio Christian on Friday and Saturday.
