Woeste start to swing his bat

No. 18 Grenadiers Open RSC Play With Sweep of Brescia

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The No. 18-ranked IU Southeast baseball team defeated Brescia 3-2 and 12-3 to open River States Conference play on Thursday.

In game one, the Bearcats got on the board in the top of the second inning but Clay Woeste tied the game in the third inning when he doubled to score Trevor Campbell.

Brescia took the lead back in the top of the fifth inning when Hunter Canada reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Cameron Dean.

Trevor MacDonald doubled down the left field line in the fifth but was stranded there. Derek Wagner hit a two-out double in the sixth and MacDonald hit a two-out triple in the seventh but the Grenadiers could not drive them in.

IU Southeast tied the game in the eighth when Brody Tanksley doubled and Marco Romero followed with a single to score Tyler Mills.

Brescia had runners at the corners with one out but Hunter Kloke entered and promptly got a strikeout and a groundout to get out of the jam.

Brandon Boxer was hit and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Woeste came through with a double to center to win the game.

Campbell, Woeste and MacDonald each had two hits in the win. Lane Oesterling worked seven solid innings and allowed just two runs, one earned on seven hits, he walked one and struck out six in a no-decision.

In game two, IU Southeast fell behind once again as the Bearcats scored a run in the top of the first but the Grenadiers quickly answered with a pair in the bottom of the inning.

Brody Tanksley and Marco Romero each had RBI groundout to give IU Southeast the lead.

The Grenadiers added a run in the third and two in the fourth but put the game away with a four-run fifth.

Tanksley came through again, this time with RBI double and Romero followed with a two-run single. A Ben Berenda doubled capped off the rally as he drove in Romero.

In the sixth, Romero doubled to drive in Clay Woeste and Brayden Hazelwood and Tyler Mills followed with a RBI single.

Marco Romero was 3-for-4 with four RBI in the win.

IU Southeast concludes the series Friday at noon.
