No. 18 Grenadiers Sweep Doubleheader at Georgetown College

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The No. 18-ranked IU Southeast baseball team swept a doubleheader against Georgetown College on Tuesday, winning game one 11-2 and game two 4-1.

In game one, the IU Southeast offense provided an immediate spark by scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. The scoring was kicked off by a two-RBI single by Brandon Boxer. Blake Cook followed with a single of his own, and both Boxer and Cook scored on a three-run home run by Derek Wagner.

In the top of the second, Clay Woeste walked and subsequently stole second. After advancing to third on a fielder's choice, Woeste scored on a single by Marco Romero to give the Grenadiers a 6-0 lead. Georgetown made it a 6-1 game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second.

The Grenadiers took a 7-1 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI triple by Trevor Campbell. Georgetown responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 7-2 game.

The game was blown wide open in the sixth inning. After singles by Ben Berenda and Clay Woeste, Trevor Campbell launched a three-run home run to give the Grenadiers a 10-2 advantage. IU Southeast added another run when pinch runner Tyler Mills scored on an RBI single by Brandon Boxer.

Trevor Campbell drove in four runs, and both Brandon Boxer and Derek Wagner drove in three runs in the 11-2 victory. The Grenadier pitching staff gave up two runs on four hits in seven innings, striking out five and walking only one.

In game two, the Grenadiers scored first once again, plating three runs in the top of the second inning. Derek Wagner scored the first run of the game on an error by Georgetown. Trevor MacDonald, who reached on the error, scored on an RBI-single by Clay Woeste. John Ullom scored the third run of the inning for the Grenadiers when Brody Tanksley drew a bases-loaded walk.

Marco Romero led off the top of the fifth inning with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Ray Aponte drove Romero in with an RBI single, giving IU Southeast a 4-0 lead.

Georgetown fought back, scoring a run in the sixth inning to make it a 4-1 game. The tying run came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth, but Grenadier pitcher Gavin Knust got out of the jam with just the one run allowed.

IU Southeast would go on to win the second game 4-1. Five Grenadier pitchers held the Georgetown offense to one unearned run on six hits in seven innings in game two.

The Grenadier offense scored 15 runs on 23 hits in the doubleheader sweep.

The No. 18-ranked Grenadiers (17-8) travel to Rio Grande for a three-game series this weekend.
