No. 17 Grenadiers Defeat Rio Grande 10-8 To Win Series

Box Score

RIO GRANDE, Ohio – No. 17 IU Southeast defeated Rio Grande 10-8 in 12 innings to earn a River States Conference series win on Saturday.

Trevor Campbell led off with a home run to right, his third of the series, but the RedStorm answered with seven-straight runs over the next three innings to take a 7-1 lead.

Ray Aponte hit the first of two home runs on the day in the fourth inning and then a four-run fifth inning cut the lead to 8-6.

In the fifth, Marco Romero hit a two-run double to center and Aponte hit his second home run to right to drive in Romero.

John Ullom hit a solo home run to right in the sixth cut into the lead. Five-straight walks allowed the tying run to score as Campbell scored on the bases-loaded walk by Trevor MacDonald.

It looked like Rio Grande might take the lead right back in the seventh when Brady Conley singled to center with Mitch Santino at second but a great throw home by Trevor MacDonald cut down Santino at the plate.

Daunte DeCello and Clay Woeste stole second and third with two outs in the 10th inning but a groundout ended the threat.

IU Southeast took the lead for good in the 12th inning. John Ullom reached first on an error and Woeste doubled to drive him home for the lead. After a sacrifice bunt by MacDonald moved Woeste to third, Brody Tanksley hit a sacrifice fly to add to the lead.

The first two RedStorm batters were retired in the bottom of the inning but a walk and hit batter put the tying runs on base. After a passed ball put both runners in scoring position, Gavin Knust got a groundout to first to end the game.

Clay Woeste, Ray Aponte, Brodty Tanksley and Marco Romero each had two hits in the win. Aponte drove in three and Romero knocked in two.

Gavin Knust worked four and two-thirds innings of relief for the win. He allowed one hit and two walks while striking out six.

IU Southeast hosts Campbellsville Tuesday at 5 p.m.
