Offense Leads No. 17 Grenadiers To 16-7 Win Over Campbellsville

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The No. 17 ranked IU Southeast baseball team defeated Campbellsville 16-7 to improve to 20-9 on the season.

The IU Southeast offense showed up early in the contest, scoring twelve runs in the first two innings of the game. Grenadiers starting pitcher Tyler Yotkewich threw a scoreless top of the first in his only inning of work.

After the first three IU Southeast batters reached in the bottom of the first, Marco Romero got the scoring started with a two-run double to give the Grenadiers a 2-0 lead. Ray Aponte drove in a run on the third error of the inning by Campbellsville. Brandon Boxer gave the Grenadiers a 4-0 lead on an RBI single.

Ben Berenda drove home two more Grenadiers to give them a 6-0 lead. A John Ullom double brought the lead to 7-0, and IU Southeast took a 9-0 lead on a two-RBI single by Brody Tanksley.

The Grenadiers did more damage in the second inning. Ben Berenda drove in his third run of the day on a sacrifice fly. A Clay Woeste RBI single gave the Grenadiers an 11-0 lead, and a passed ball allowed John Ullom to score to extend the lead to 12-0.

Campbellsville fought back, scoring six runs on five hits in the top of the third. After three innings of play, the Grenadiers led 12-6.

The Grenadiers scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. The first run was scored on another Campbellsville error. Brandon Boxer drove in the Grenadiers' 14th run of the game on an RBI single. IU Southeast led 14-6 after five innings.

In the top of the sixth, Campbellsville added a run to make it a 14-7 game. The Grenadiers responded in the bottom half of the six, taking a 15-7 lead on an RBI groundout by Tyler Mills. A John Ullom RBI single in the bottom of the seventh gave IU Southeast a 16-7 lead.

The Grenadiers would go on to win by a score of 16-7. The Grenadiers scored 16 runs on 11 hits as they benefitted from six Campbellsville errors. Ben Berenda led IU Southeast with 3 RBIs. Eight different Grenadiers recorded an RBI in the contest. Brandon Boxer and Brody Tanksley each had three hits in the game.

The Grenadiers used 10 pitchers in the nine-inning game. None of the pitchers recorded more than three outs, a strategy that IU Southeast has implemented throughout the season.

No. 17 IU Southeast heads to Oakland City for a three-game RSC series this weekend.
