Box Score 3 NEW ALBANY, IN. – The No. 19 ranked IU Southeast baseball team defeated RSC rival Point Park in a doubleheader on Sunday. The Grenadiers won game one 6-5 and game two 5-3.
In game one, Point Park struck first. Jared Campbell delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the first to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
IU Southeast broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the third. Marco Romero skied a ball to right field for a 2-run triple to give the Grenadiers a 2-1 lead. The Grenadiers added to their lead with a Trevor Campbell solo home run in the bottom half of the fifth. Back-to-back triples by John Ullom and Daunte DeCello in the sixth inning gave IU Southeast a 4-1 lead.
Point Park answered in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs on an RBI double and an RBI single to narrow the Grenadier lead to 4-3. IU Southeast got one back in the bottom half of the inning as Ray Aponte delivered an RBI single to put the Grenadiers up 5-3.
The Grenadiers maintained that 5-3 advantage headed into the ninth. A hit by pitch and two singles loaded the bases for Point Park with one out. A strikeout put the Grenadiers one out away from a win, but Point Park's Jared Campbell had other plans, delivering a 2-RBI single to tie the game at 5-5.
After Point Park tied the game, the Grenadiers had a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Brody Tanksley launched a mammoth walk off home run to secure a 6-5 victory for IU Southeast.
Both starters were magnificent in game one. Point Park's Easton Klein and IU Southeast's Hunter Kloke struck out 12 and 13 batters, respectively, in six innings of work.
In game 2, it was IU Southeast's turn to score first. Clay Woeste scored on a wild pitch, Marco Romero delivered an RBI single, and Ben Berenda added an RBI single of his own to give the Grenadiers a 3-0 lead after one.
Point Park added a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI double to make it a 3-1 Grenadier lead. The Pioneers cut the lead to 3-2 on an RBI single in the top of the fifth. The Grenadiers answered in the bottom of the fifth, as Brandon Boxer delivered an RBI triple to make it a 4-2 game. Ben Berenda brought home Boxer on an RBI single to make it 5-2 Grenadiers.
An RBI double by Point Park in the sixth made it a 5-3 game, but IU Southeast's Brenden Bube closed the door in the seventh to secure the two-run victory.
The No. 19 ranked Grenadiers moved to 24-10 on the season and 12-2 in the RSC. Point Park fell to 23-9 overall and 11-3 in the RSC.
The Grenadiers and Pioneers finish their series on Monday, weather permitting.
