Box Score 2 OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – The No. 17-ranked IU Southeast baseball team won 8-7 and 16-4 over Oakland City on Friday, sweeping the doubleheader to move to 10-1 in the RSC and 22-9 overall.
In game one, the Grenadiers started out fast as they have all year, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. IU Southeast used a two-out rally to get on the board in the first. Brody Tanksley singled, and pinch runner Daunte DeCello scored on an RBI double by Marco Romero. Derek Wagner followed with a two-run home run to put the Grenadiers up 3-0.
IU Southeast looked to break the game open in the top of the fourth. John Ullom gave the Grenadiers a 4-1 lead on an RBI single. An Oakland City error allowed another run to score. Trevor Campbell plated a run on a sac fly, and Derek Wagner drove in his third run of the day on an RBI single to give the Grenadiers a 7-1 lead.
The Grenadiers took an 8-1 lead on a bases loaded walk by Ray Aponte. Oakland City responded in a major way. The Mighty Oaks loaded the bases with one out in the inning. Three straight hits brought Oakland City within two runs, and an RBI groundout made it an 8-7 ballgame.
The Grenadier pitching staff answered the six-run inning by retiring nine straight batters to secure an 8-7 victory. The Grenadiers scored eight runs on 12 hits in game one. Hunter Kloke pitched five innings of four-hit, one-run baseball. The duo of Brenden Bube and Conner Fries combined to give up only one hit in 3.2 innings, striking out four batters.
Game two once again began with the Grenadiers scoring a run before their defense took the field. A Marco Romero sacrifice fly put IU Southeast on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead. The Grenadiers plated two more runs in the top of the second on a 2-RBI single by John Ullom.
IU Southeast broke the game open in the top of the third. The Grenadiers took a 4-0 lead on an RBI double by Brandon Boxer. John Ullom plated two more runs on his second 2-RBI single of the game to make it a 6-0 advantage. Clay Woeste continued the offensive onslaught, launching a three-run home run to make it a 9-0 game.
Oakland City closed the gap to 9-3, but the Grenadier offense showed no signs of slowing down. The Grenadiers added two runs to make it an 11-3 advantage, and John Ullom continued his monster performance by clubbing a grand slam to make it a 15-3 game.
The Grenadiers would go on to win 16-4 in seven innings. John Ullom drove in eight of the team's 16 runs, and Clay Woeste added three RBIs in the Grenadier victory.
No. 17 IU Southeast concludes a three-game series with Oakland City on Saturday.
