No. 18 IU Southeast Defeats IU Kokomo In Series Opener Friday

KOKOMO, In. – The No. 18-ranked IU Southeast baseball team rolled past RSC foe IU Kokomo 10-3 on Friday.

The scoring kicked off in the top of the third inning. Clay Woeste led off with a double, and Trevor Campbell followed with a double of his own to give the Grenadiers a 1-0 advantage. After Campbell advanced to third on a wild pitch, Marco Romero drove him in with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 IU Southeast.

IU Kokomo made it a 2-1 game in the bottom of the third with a two out RBI single. The game remained 2-1 until the sixth inning.

A one-out solo home run by John Ullom in the top of the sixth inning made it 3-1 IU Southeast. IU Kokomo looked to limit the damage with only one run allowed, but the Grenadiers were not finished. With two outs, IU Southeast scored three runs on four straight singles to make it a 6-1 game.

After seven innings, the Grenadiers led 6-2. IU Southeast scored a run on an IU Kokomo error in the top of the eighth inning to make it 7-2, but the Cougars responded with a run in the bottom half of the eighth to make it 7-3.

The Grenadiers used the ninth to break the game open. IU Southeast loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the inning. IU Kokomo managed to get two straight outs without allowing a run, but the Grenadiers scored three runs on a Clay Woeste double and a Cougar error to make it 10-3 IU Southeast.

IU Southeast went on to win game one of the series 10-3. Starter Hunter Kloke threw eight strong innings, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out six. Gavin Knust pitched a perfect ninth to secure the win for the Grenadiers. The first four hitters in the Grenadier lineup did most of the damage in the contest, driving in seven of the team's ten runs.

The Grenadiers moved to 30-12 overall and 16-3 in RSC play with the win on Friday. IU Kokomo fell to 24-16 overall and 14-4 in conference play.

The Grenadiers finish the series against IU Kokomo with a doubleheader on Saturday.
