Box Score 2 KOKOMO, Ind. – The No. 18-ranked IU Southeast baseball team split a doubleheader with IU Kokomo dropping game one 12-11 in 11 innings and winning the second game 18-2.
In game one, IU Southeast scored the first 10 runs of the game but a 10-run ninth inning rally by IU Kokomo forced extra innings.
Marco Romero opened the scoring with a RBI double in the top of the first. Clay Woeste had two hits, including an RBI triple in the second inning. Trevor Campbell followed with a RBI single to score Woeste and make it 4-0 IU Southeast.
The Grenadiers did not score again until the eighth inning when Brandon Boxer doubled and drove in Romero. Ben Berenda drove in two runs with a double later in the inning.
Brandon Boxer made it 10-0 with a two-run home run in the ninth inning.
Mason Melton's two-run single cut the lead to 10-4 and two more singles cut the deficit to three.
A three-run home run by Jared Head tied the game and sent the contest to extra innings.
Brandon Boxer drove in his fourth run of the game with a RBI single to short in the top of the 11th inning but IU Southeast could not hold the lead.
The Grenadiers were one out from the win but a single and hit batter loaded the bases. Bryce Lenz singled to score two and win the game for the Cougars.
Brandon Boxer was 4-for-6 with two runs scored and four RBI. Marco Romero and Derek Wagner each had three hits in the loss. Lane Oesterling had a great outing, working seven shutout innings and allowing just four hits while striking out four but he got a no decision.
In game two, the Grenadiers responded by scoring in each of the first five innings. After Romero opened the scoring with a RBI single and the Cougars responded in the bottom of the first, Daunte DeCello hit a two-run home run to left to give the Grenadiers a 3-1 after two innings.
DeCello drove in two more runs with a two-run single in the third.
An eight-run fifth inning capped off the game for the Grenadiers. After a sacrifice fly by Brody Tanksley and a RBI single by Romero, Boxer knocked in a pair of runs with a single to center.
Trevor MacDonald singled to center to drive in Tyler Mills and a fielder's choice off the bat of DeCello socred Boxer. Clay Woeste provided the exclamation point with a two-run home run to left.
Tyler Yotkewich worked five innings allowing two runs on six hits, he walked a pair and struck out one for his sixth win.
Cade Reynolds and Jacob Morley each worked scoreless innings of relief. Trevor Campbell had three hits, Clay Woeste had two hits and drove in three and Boxer drove in four more runs on two hits while scoring three runs.
IU Southeast hosts the University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
