No. 18 Grenadiers Get Past Cumberlands 11-9 In Home Finale

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The No. 18-ranked IU Southeast baseball team concluded the home portion of its schedule with an 11-9 win over (RV) University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday.

The first five batters in the Grenadier batting order combined for 10 hits and scored six runs in the contest. Brody Tanksley led the way with a 3-for-6 outing. He scored twice and knocked in a run.

IU Southeast (32-13) fell behind 4-0 after the top of the first inning but a two-run home run by Marco Romero in his final home game cut the lead in half.

The Grenadiers took the lead in the bottom of the third with a four-run outburst. Marco Romero led off with a single and move to second on an error. He scored on a double by Derek Wagner.

Ben Berenda singled to short to score Wagner. A sacrifice bunt by Trevor MacDonald moved runners to second and third and a walk to Daunte DeCello loaded the bases with one out.

Clay Woeste doubled to center to drive in Brandon Boxer and John Ullom and DeCello was tagged out at the plate, but the Grenadiers led 7-5 after three innings.

Ben Berenda added to the lead in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to drive in Tanksley.

The Patriots cut the deficit to a run in the fifth when a RBI groundout and a home run by Candido Encarnacion plated two runs.

IU Southeast answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Brody Tanksley singled up the middle to score Trevor Campbell, who had tripled.

Clay Woeste drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to pad the lead once again. In the eighth, IU Southeast added some insurance when Trevor Campbell hit his second triple, scoring DeCello.

Zach Gutermuth worked two innings for his first collegiate win. He allowed a run on two hits and struck out a batter. Conner Fries worked the final two innings for his third save.

Brody Tanksley led the way with three hits. Clay Woeste had two hits and drove in four and Campbell and Romero each had two hits in the win.

IU Southeast travels to Midway to conclude the regular season with a series on Thursday and Friday.
