Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. – The No. 18 ranked IU Southeast baseball team defeated Midway 12-6 on Friday, securing a three-game sweep over the Eagles.
IU Southeast wasted little time getting the offense going as the Grenadiers had runners on second and third with one out just three batters into the game. Marco Romero delivered a two-run double to give IU Southeast a 2-0 lead, and an RBI groundout by Brandon Boxer extended the lead to 3-0.
Clay Woeste led off the top of the third inning with a solo home run, putting the Grenadiers ahead 4-0. Back-to-back doubles by Marco Romero and Brandon Boxer put IU Southeast ahead 5-0. Ben Berenda followed with an RBI single to make it 6-0.
A fielding error by IU Southeast gave Midway their first run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Grenadiers still maintained a 6-1 lead headed into the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Midway started to chip away at the Grenadier lead. The Eagles loaded the bases with one out in the inning and scored their second run of the game on a bases loaded walk. An RBI groundout made it 6-3, and a two-out single narrowed the Grenadier lead to 6-5.
The top of the eighth began with a Trevor Campbell walk and a Derek Wagner single. Marco Romero delivered again for the Grenadiers, driving home Campbell with an RBI single to make it 7-5 IU Southeast. Brandon Boxer loaded the bases with a bunt single, and Ben Berenda added an RBI with a groundout.
Tyler Mills made it 10-5 Grenadiers with a two-run double, and Trevor MacDonald extended the lead to 11-5 with an RBI triple. Clay Woeste capped off the six-run eighth inning with an RBI single to make it 12-5 IU Southeast.
Midway loaded the bases again in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Eagles only managed one run. The Grenadiers would go on to win 12-6, completing the three-game sweep of Midway.
Marco Romero led the Grenadiers with three hits and three RBIs. IU Southeast starting pitcher Lane Oesterling threw five scoreless innings to pick up the win.
The No. 18 Grenadiers finish the regular season 35-13 overall and 20-4 in RSC play. IU Southeast will look to keep their momentum going into the RSC Baseball Championship, which begins next week.
