Box Score CHILLICOTHE, Ohio. – The top-seeded IU Southeast baseball team advanced to the winner's bracket final in the RSC Baseball Championship with a 4-0 victory over IU Kokomo on Saturday.
The game started as a pitcher's duel with both teams only allowing one hit through the first three innings. IU Kokomo picked up their second hit of the day in the top of the fourth but could not get on the scoreboard.
The Grenadiers began the bottom of the fourth with a walk from Trevor Campbell. The next batter was Brody Tanksley, who launched a two-run home run to left field to give the Grenadiers a 2-0 lead.
An error by IU Southeast and a stolen base by IU Kokomo allowed the Cougars to have a runner in scoring position before recording an out in the top of the fifth. The next two batters grounded out, but a fielder's choice put runners on first and third with two outs. IU Southeast starter Tyler Yotkewich escaped the jam by inducing the third groundout of the inning.
The bottom of the fifth started with a double by John Ullom and a hit by pitch to give the Grenadiers two men on with no outs. Two straight fielder's choices put runners on first and third with two away. Clay Woeste stole second, but IU Kokomo drew a Grenadier flyout to end the inning.
Each team saw a runner reach scoring position in the sixth inning, but neither team could plate a run. After seven innings, IU Southeast led 2-0.
Brody Tanksley led off the bottom of the eighth with a double down the right field line. Marco Romero was intentionally walked to give the Cougars a double play opportunity. Derek Wagner took advantage of the opportunity and delivered a two-run single to double the Grenadier lead to 4-0.
IU Kokomo led off the ninth with a double, but Connor Fries closed the door to secure a 4-0 win for IU Southeast.
Tyler Yotkewich picked up his seventh win of the season, throwing five scoreless innings. Conner Fries pitched the last four innings for the Grenadiers and picked up his fourth save of the season. The two pitchers combined to allow only five hits.
Brody Tanksley and Derek Wagner each had two hits in the contest. The two combined to drive in all four Grenadier runs.
The top seeded Grenadiers look to continue their winning ways on Sunday, where they will play in the winner's bracket final in the RSC Baseball Championship.
